Feeling Arty
19 November 2010
National medical charity, the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN), is holding an art exhibition from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 November 2010, celebrating work by patients and local artists. The weekend’s free-entry events will include children’s art workshops and a Christmas Fair, all raising much-needed funds for the charity.
In with the old, out with the Newfocuses on recycling as its theme. As well as featuring work from residents and patients at the RHN, the exhibition will include works from professional artists, including Putney-based Ken Cox and Sim Hock.
Artist, Ken Cox says: “I have been volunteering at the RHN for over three years now and am really excited to be involved in this project. Working with people who have such serious conditions is extremely moving and it is great to be able to give something back to such an inspiring organisation.”
Hannah Turner, Art Technician at the RHN, says: “It’s great that we can celebrate the achievements of some of our residents who have made art as part of their occupational therapy or leisure time. With the Christmas Fair and children’s art workshops going on along side, there really is something for everyone.”
The workshops offer children a fun insight into how some of the profoundly disabled patients at the RHN manage to create art. A variety of materials are used that will show what someone can achieve with limited arm movement, or using only their mouth, for example.
The RHN’s first Christmas Fair provides the chance to get some of those presents bought and out of the way whilst enjoying a mince pie and mulled wine.
The RHN helps people who have suffered severe damage to the brain. Some have been in car accidents, been mugged or might simply have fallen down stairs. Others have had a stroke, a heart attack, or have an illness affecting their brain such as Multiple-Sclerosis or Huntingdon’s disease. The RHN offers an extensive range of rehabilitation and long-term care services, including specialist therapies and state of the art technology - giving the people we care for the best possible quality of life, whatever their level of ability.
