Helen Gill-Thwaites MBE MSc
SMART Developer and Consultant

Helen started work at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in 1989 working on the Profound Brain Damage Unit, and was promoted to Head Occupational Therapist in 1995. She has developed considerable experience in the assessment of the vegetative and minimally conscious state patients and has dedicated her work to the development of SMART, conducting research and producing publications as outlined on the SMART publication list. In 2000 she won the BBC Peoples Award for Innovation with Ros Munday for the development of SMART. In 2002 Helen was voted amongst the top 10 OTs in the Independent newspaper.  In the 2011 New Years Honours list  Helen received an MBE for her work and was invited to become a member of the working party to review the Royal College of Physicians guidelines on Vegetative State.  Helen has produced a range of publications in this field, many of which can be obtained by contacting smart@rhn.org.uk.
