Job outline
The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability is a non-profit, medical charity, a hospital and home, based in Putney, South West London. We provide both short and long-term specialist services (assessment, rehabilitation and disability management) for adults with profound or complex disabilities resulting from damage to the brain or nervous system. Through these services, we seek to enable people with profound neuro-disability to enjoy an optimal quality of life.
We are looking for staff to join a bank of Pool Support Assistants to assist in the running of the pool programme at RHN. This is a programme of sessions undertaken in the water by individual clients from across the Organisation. Close working with the staff from physiotherapy and from the recreation and leisure team will be required.
The posts are managed through physiotherapy, but the work entails working across 2 services. The sessions may be Aquatic Physiotherapy led by the physiotherapy team, or may be supporting the Recreation and Leisure Service and their Aquability leisure programme available to our long term care residents. Aquatic physiotherapy is undertaken with both long term residents and rehabilitation patients.
There are always 2 Pool Support Assistants on duty. As a bank Pool Support Assistant you will be expected to work alongside the other staff member on duty. The post entails making sure the individual clients can attend their session, preparing the individual for the pool by undressing, hoisting or assisting in the transfer of the patients into the pool, showering and dressing them after the pool and returning them to their chair. The post holder will also need to ensure the individual is returned to their ward. Experience as a health care assistant, familiarity with disability and an enjoyment of a poolside environment would be invaluable.
There will some responsibility for understanding the pool chemistry, undertaking health and safety checks if required, and generally ensuring that the pool facility is well maintained. Training will be provided.
We have 2 full-time Pool Support Assistants and we require several members of bank staff to cover for annual leave, mandatory training etc in order to keep all sessions running. The time to be covered is approximately 12 weeks per year, but requirements will be on an ad hoc basis. There are currently 3 blocks of time in which the pool is used per day, beginning at 10.30 am and ending by 5.30pm, plus a weekly Saturday morning session. Pool Sessions run from 10.30- 12.45, 1.30- 3.45, and 4.15 -5.30pm Mon –Fri, and 10.15 – 12.30 on Saturdays. As a bank Pool Support Assistant we may need to call on you at short notice to cover a session.
Bank Holidays are excluded, and the pool is closed on a regular basis for 2 weeks in each year to allow deep cleaning and plant maintenance to be undertaken.
Your availability will be established at interview.
Staff will be redeployed to another clinical area in the event of a session being cancelled without warning
