Tips, tools and techniques for working with people with severe and profound brain injury
Wednesday 11 March 2026
Working with people with very severe brain injury presents a wide range of challenges for clinical teams. Cognitive functioning underpins everything, including people’s ability to make their own decisions, set goals, engage in rehabilitation, and navigate daily life. In addition, it is not possible to create a robust formulation of mood or behavioural difficulties without understanding the person’s cognitive profile. However, carrying out a detailed assessment of cognitive functioning can be difficult when it is not possible to administer a standardised neuropsychological test battery or formal cognitive screening measure.
This conference will outline these issues in more detail and provide attendees with practical tips on how to approach assessment, formulation and intervention with this patient-group, with a particular focus on cognition, behaviour and emotional functioning. There will be discussions around working with families and clinical teams, areas such as common pitfalls and how to avoid these in practice, and the legal landscape including application of the Mental Capacity Act and best interests decision-making with these patients.
The conference is aimed at clinicians including clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, medical professionals, SLTs, OTs and other members of the MDT who work with these patients. It will also be of interest to those working with these patients and their families in other roles, such as neuro-navigators, medicolegal case managers, and personal injury solicitors.
