Salary range: £25,714 – £28,926 depending on experience

Responsible for: Provision of prescribed speech and language therapy treatment programmes and providing admin support to the SLT team.

About the role

We are looking for a Speech and Language Therapy Technical Instructor to join our team the RHN. This role involves working across a range of specialist units including the Brain Injury Service, Neuro-behavioural Rehabilitation Unit, Ventilator Unit, Specialist Nursing Home, Huntington’s Disease Unit and Adult Learning Disability unit. You will act as a support practitioner to the Speech and Language Therapy service as part of an interdisciplinary team. You will be required to prepare and administer therapeutic programmes for communication and swallowing difficulties under the direction of qualified Speech and Language Therapists. You will also provide support during the weekly Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) clinic.

Main Objectives of the role

3. To provide a flexible speech and language therapy support service for both individual patients and groups within a multidisciplinary team environment.

4. To be responsible for organising and running therapeutic individual sessions and groups with a designated caseload of patients using specific technical knowledge/skill, modifying and adapting therapeutic programmes, according to patient need and agreed aims, with support and liaison from the prescribing SLT.

5. To communicate complex information related to treatment programmes and to provide timely feedback to the SLT.

6. To assist SLTs in organising and running training sessions and administration for courses.

7. To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice with peers and supervisors, to maintain own knowledge base and to identify own areas for development.

8. To undertake administrative responsibilities appropriate to the needs of the service

Person specification: Essential

1. Formal Qualifications to degree level or equivalent

2. Basic understanding of speech and language therapy profession

3. Basic understanding of communication difficulties in brain injury and stroke and the impact upon the patient.

4. Experience of working with adults with a disability either in health, social or educational setting.

5. Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.

6. Evidence of ability to cope effectively in difficult situations

7. Ability to organise work and manage time effectively and independently.

8. Ability to build effective working relationships with patient, multi-disciplinary team and with other professionals.

9. Competent IT skills

Desirable

10. Attended any relevant training courses for adults with communication disability

11. ECDL qualification.

1. To use acquired speech and language therapy skills and techniques in management
of communication and swallowing impairments to provide effective intervention as
directed by a qualified SLT.
2. To carry out therapy programmes as prescribed by the treating SLT
3. To maintain appropriate, accurate and up to date patient records in line with policies
and standards in both written and electronic format.
4. To record in patient’s records, patient’s progress in accordance with the specific aims
and objectives outlined by the SLT.
5. To carry out specified informal assessments e.g. behaviour observation checklists
without supervision and to discuss findings with the SLT.
6. To set up and support SLTs during the weekly FEES clinic.
7. To monitor continually and evaluate changes in the client’s responses, and feedback
relevant information to the therapist as required.
8. To discuss progress of programmes with treating SLT according to outcomes of
sessions.
9. To adapt, modify and deliver Technical Instructor therapy programmes for patients in
conjunction with the designated SLTs according to agreed aims, with regular liaison
with an SLT.
10. To work collaboratively with SLTs in an effort to meet agreed clinical objectives and
patient goals.
