Staff Nurse – Challenging Behaviour Unit

We currently have a vacancy for a strong and dynamic registered nurse on Wellesley Ward, a 13 bed neuro-behavioural service for adults with an acquired brain injury.

These patients’ rehabilitation and placement options have been limited, often due to the nature of their behaviour and it is a busy, sometimes loud environment.

As with any service that works with challenging behaviour our goal is not simply to manage and reduce risk but also to take a curious approach to the underlying purpose of such behaviour and try to develop better ways for our patients to get their needs met.

The ward culture is based on positive behavioural support through which we aim to move patients towards functional and quality of life goals.

All staff undergo training and we have dedicated members of staff who collect and analyse behavioural data in order to monitor intervention progress. There is broad variation in the cognitive and physical abilities of our patients but typically there is a high level of co-morbidity and a high level of neuro-disability and medical needs.

In addition to this there is a high level of AHP input into the unit with dedicated Neuropsychology, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language therapy. Due to the challenges encountered working in such an environment it is very important that the nursing and HCA team form a central part of the wider multidisciplinary team.

This role will present an exciting challenge to applicants who are able to work across the boundaries of general, learning disability and mental health nursing.

It would suit someone who is keen to work collaboratively in order to produce positive outcomes for our patients. In addition to the challenges that this role brings there is also the great benefit of being part of a supportive, experienced and effective wider team.
