Adapting clinical approaches to dysphagia management in the context of cognitive impairment following complex brain injury

14 Jul 2026 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

Tuesday 14 July 2026

This one day course will focus on the assessment, management and complex decision making associated with swallowing difficulties when working with complex cognitive impairment following acquired brain injury. The day would benefit speech and language therapists (SLT) who are working in the field of brain injury at any point across the patient pathway as we consider the implications of cognitive impairment in initial assessment and long term care.

The course will cover topics including

  • Assessment and rehabilitation approaches when working with people with challenging behaviours secondary to brain injury.
  • Case studies exploring “informal”/functional assessment and therapy approaches in the context of a level 1 rehabilitation setting as well the long term care setting. In these we will also explore the interplay between facilitating independence and risk management including eating and drinking at risk (EDAR)
  • MDT approaches and management of complex eating and drinking difficulties.
  • Dysphagia assessment in the context of prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDOC)
