Managing Behaviours that Challenge in Individuals with a Brain Injury: The Positive Behaviour Support Approach

20 Apr 2027 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

Tuesday 20 April 2027

This one-day course, delivered at the RHN, is designed for professionals (AHP’s, Doctors, Psychologists and support workers) working with people who have sustained a brain injury and would like to develop their skills and knowledge of managing behaviours that challenge.

The course provides a practical and evidence-informed introduction to the principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). Participants will explore how PBS can be used to understand and respond to challenging behaviour, with strategies that are effective, cost-effective, person-centred, and applicable across a range of settings and behaviours.

Participants will be asked to reflect on a case study from their service and will be supported to apply the taught material so that they feel able to apply it in their own context.

By the end of the course, attendees will

  • Have an understanding of the possible contributors to challenging behaviour following brain injury.
  • How to identify restriction and restraint in order to minimise it.
  • Be able to describe the possible functions of challenging behaviour – why is it happening and what does it tell us?
  • Have an understanding of the development of both pro-active (preventative) and reactive strategies.
  • Understand the role of communication impairment in challenging behaviour
  • Be able to identify methods that can be incorporated into the clients’ environment and lead to the reduction in incidences of challenging behaviour.
  • Understand the purpose of completing and collecting data around the incidence of challenging behaviour.
  • Have an understanding of how debriefing and regular staff support mechanisms may help teams working with people with behaviours that challenge.

The course is delivered by specialist clinicians from the RHN’s Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Nursing teams, bringing together multidisciplinary expertise and practical experience.

Cost: £180 including lunch and resources
