Open Lecture – Instrumental Assessment of Swallowing in Complex Neuro-Disability
Effective dysphagia assessment is a key part of the SLT role in caring for people with severe and complex brain injuries and progressive neurological conditions
Using instrumental assessments can be daunting in this population and limited access may adversely affect clients’ outcomes.
In this lecture the indications and barriers to instrumental swallow assessment in the complex neuro-disability caseload are explored in reference to research evidence, national policies, case studies and real world clinical experience. The lecture covers the use of FEES, Videofluroscopy as well as cough reflex testing and other emerging technologies.
