Open lecture – ‘Taking round the hat’: historical fundraising and Christmas appeals, 1872-1937
Join Chris Olver (RHN Archivist) and Dr Sinéad Moriarty (Lecturer, Department of English, Trinity College, Dublin) for a talk on historical Christmas charitable fundraising in the Victorian and Edwardian eras
This online open lecture will explore a collection of historical Christmas appeals published by the hospital from 1872 to 1937. The hospital appeals were written by well-known authors such as Anne Thackeray (1837-1919), Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) and Rev Philip Power (1822-1899) and also featured some of the earliest photographs of the hospital and its patients. Dr Moriarty will discuss the wider context of Victorian and Edwardian philanthropy, looking at the RHN appeals as well as fundraising materials from other contemporary charities such as Great Ormond Street Hospital in the context of the development of Victorian fundraising and the literature it produced.
The talk will draw on newly catalogued and digitised historic appeals from the RHN Archives, supported by the generous funding of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
