The Perceive, Recall, Plan & Perform (PRPP) Training
Friday 8 – Tuesday 12 May 2026
The Perceive, Recall, Plan and Perform System of Task Analysis (PRPP System) comprises and assessment (PRPP Assessment) and an intervention (PRPP Intervention). The PRPP System focuses on functional cognition, that is, how people apply cognitive strategies to any needed or desired occupation. It is used with people of all ages from infancy to advanced age irrespective of diagnosis, severity or chronicity.
PRPP Assessment (PRPP-A) is a criterion referenced, strengths based approach that is person centred, culturally responsive and evidence based. It is administered in two stages:
• Stage One Task Performance Mastery is used to assess occupational performance mastery; that is, how well the occupation is performed. Mistakes in performance are identified using the error typology of accuracy, omission, repetition and timing. Stage One yields a mastery score expressed as a percentage of the task performed without difficulty.
• Stage Two Cognitive Strategy Application is used to identify reasons for task performance mistakes. An information processing model of cognition underpins the structure of Stage Two. Twelve aspects of information processing have been operationalised as a set of thirty five observable behaviours. These behaviours align with dimensions of attention and sensory processing (Perceive), learning and memory (Recall), planning, problem solving and self-appraisal (Plan), and initiation of responses and action monitoring (Perform). Each behaviour is scored on a 3-2-1 scale according to how those behaviours contributed to effective task performance.
Stage Two yields strategy application scores for the twelve sub-sets of information processing which are expressed as percentages and plotted to illustrate effective and ineffective strategy application.
• PRPP Intervention (PRPP-I) completes the System. It focuses on improving occupational performance mastery by building on PRPP cognitive strategy application strengths while simultaneously addressing PRPP strategy application difficulties. PRPP-I is grounded in principles of systematic instruction where cues and prompts are specific to perceive, recall, plan and perform needs. A stop-attend-sense-think-do framework underpins the intervention. Completion of a full PRPP-A course is a prerequisite for enrolment.
Course objectives: PRPP-A
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the occupational therapy, neurosciences and educational foundation of the assessment, and its psychometric properties.
- Assess and score task performance mastery from videotaped examples of client performances using Stage One of the PRPP Assessment.
- Assess and score cognitive strategy application behaviours applied to tasks on dimensions of perceive, recall, plan and perform from videotaped examples of client performances using Stage Two of the PRPP Assessment.
- Write specific, measurable mastery and strategy application goals for clients assessed.
- Use the PRPP Assessment as a client centred outcome measure of occupational performance.
- Discuss the relevance of assessment findings to planning occupational therapy intervention.
Cost: £750 including lunch and resources
