Epilepsy Awareness Training with Midazolam Buccal Administration Competency (CPD Accredited)

About this course

This one-day, in-person course is designed not only to build knowledge, but to build confidence in supporting individuals with Epilepsy and responding safely and effectively during a seizure.

Drawing on clinical expertise and standards aligned with the Joint Epilepsy Council, the course combines theory with supervised practical teaching in the administration of rescue medication.

Practical skills will be taught and practised during the session; however, formal competency sign-off will not take place on the day and must be completed in the clinical area with an assigned assessor in line with local policy.

The course aims to strengthen knowledge, confidence and safe practice in Epilepsy care, with a clear focus on clinical governance, documentation and patient safety.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for registered and licensed healthcare professionals who support individuals with Epilepsy and may be required to respond to seizures or administer rescue medication.

This includes, but is not limited to:

• Nursing professionals
• Allied Health Professionals
• Other licensed clinical practitioners involved in direct patient care

The course welcomes participants from a range of professional backgrounds and experience levels, with teaching tailored to support inclusive learning and shared understanding.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe what Epilepsy is and define seizure, status epileptus and Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).
2. Identify the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the brain.
3. Contrast the current statistics on epilepsy diagnosis and the impact on a person’s life.
4. Analyse of the triggers, causes and susceptible groups.
5. Identify and recognise the different types of seizures.
6. Determine the importance of documentation, common medications and management used to treat seizures.
7. Administer rescue medication appropriately.

Recognition and Management of Deteriorating Adults (CPD Accredited)

About this course

The Recognition and Management of Deteriorating Adults is designed to develop transferable clinical skills applicable across a range of healthcare settings, with particular emphasis on community practice.

The course focuses on early recognition and management of patient deterioration, including airway management, structured clinical assessment and effective communication.

It supports learners to work within professional and legal boundaries, recognise escalation needs and respond confidently to emergencies as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Who is the course for?

  • Registered Nurses and Nursing Associates based Nursing Home, Acute Care and Community.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the professional, legal responsibilities and limitations in clinical practice.
  2. Effectively use the National Early Warning Score to recognise changes in an adult patient’s clinical status.
  3. Demonstrate a systematic clinical assessment using the ABCDE (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure) approach.
  4. Practise the use of a standardised communication tool – SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation).
  5. Review of the Basic Life Support Guidelines 2025 including choking according to RCUK.
  6. Identify the reversible causes of Cardiopulmonary Arrest.
  7. Demonstrate the proper use of each type of airway adjunct using manikins.
  8. Conduct an ABCDE assessment and respond to a deteriorating patient in a simulated environment.
  9. Demonstrate effective back blows and abdominal thrusts using the Anti-Choking Trainers.
  10. Manage a simulated Cardiac arrest as a team then perform high quality CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and defibrillation using an Automated External Defibrillator.
