George Sarpong, Ward Manager for Jack Emerson Centre

Q. Tell us your role and background

A: I’m the Ward Manager for Jack Emerson Centre, one of two long-term ventilation units in the RHN. I’m a registered nurse with extensive experience in complex neurological and respiratory care, including long-term ventilation. I lead a team of registered nurses and healthcare assistants working alongside a multidisciplinary team with a focus on delivering high quality, patient-centred care.

Q: Why did you choose to work in ventilation care?

A: I chose this field because the service combines specialist clinical practice with the opportunity to build impactful, long-term relationships with residents and their families. Supporting individuals with complex respiratory and neurological needs to achieve the best possible quality of life is both professionally rewarding and a privilege.

Q: What makes the RHN ventilation service special?

A: “What makes our service special is that we combine specialist clinical expertise with a deep understanding of the people we support. We do not lose sight of the person behind every diagnosis; we see individuals with aspirations, relationships, and potential. It is a privilege to work alongside a team that is committed to helping residents achieve the best possible quality of life. At the RHN, we see ability in every disability and focus on what each individual can achieve and not the limitations from their diagnosis.”
