In 1982 Tony suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage which is a very serious form of stroke
It is caused by bleeding on the surface of the brain and it’s often fatal. Tony pulled through though and, after initial rehabilitation, arrived at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in 1984 for the 24-hour care he would need for the rest of his life.
All of Tony’s every day needs are covered; he’s cared for by specialists and overall his health is good. But Tony is unable to go out on his own due to the on-going effects of his stroke all those years ago.
These include loss of short-term memory and periods of confusion which means it would be dangerous for Tony if he were to go out unaccompanied.
This one-to-one care is not covered by the NHS which is why the RHN must raise funds to cover the cost of the service.
In this regard, Tony is not unique at the RHN. There are many people who need constant 24-hour care. Thismeans that if they want to go out for any reason a nurse or health care assistant must go with them. This might be a trip out to the shops, lunch out at the local pub or any one of the hundreds of off-site leisure activities which are arranged for patients every year including
- theatre and cinema trips
- art galleries
- museums
- parks and garden trips
- shopping trips
- visiting friends
Due to his stroke Tony lives every day with disability but having nurse escorts means he can still go on outings. Without people like Anne (pictured with Tony), Tony would be stuck in the hospital.
