The Art Room

IV drip
The Occupational Therapy art room is a creative space used by patients and residents across the entire hospital. We like the art room to look as non-clinical as possible and often it is reported by patients as a ‘sanctuary away from the ward’.

Patients access OT art via a referral through their Occupational Therapist for leisure or as a creative and enjoyable way to meet rehabilitation goals, either on an individual or on a group basis.

Art gives people a way of expressing thoughts and feelings creatively. The end product can be kept by individuals as a reminder of their hard work, or shared with friends and family, promoting self-esteem and offering a sense of accomplishment. Patients’ artworks are regularly celebrated and exhibited within the RHN.

Patient quotes

“Art makes me relaxed and it is interesting”
(Diana James, Andrew Reed ward, March 2022)

“When I was young I was told I wasn’t very good at art, so I never explored it. I agreed to come along initially just to distract myself from my pain. But art sessions turned out to be much more than a distraction. One specific session was a breakthrough for me. I thought my visual perception was affected by my stroke, but in that session, the art technician helped me realise that it wasn’t and that I was quite perceptive and talented. It was like a whole new world has opened up for me, a different way to express myself. I found a new passion that I can keep pursuing even when I leave the hospital.”
(John Boteler, Drapers Ward, April 2022)

“Art at the RHN is awesome!”
(Daniel Mason, Coombs ward, April 2022)
